  • Question 1. How does the Mindful Clinic work?

The Mindful Clinic uses specially designed programmes for individuals and small groups which integrate modern Mind-Body health and healing therapies with ancient insights. These special programmes focus on promoting positive expectations and following our initial discussion and subsequent assessments could include Body Awareness, Pranayama (breathing techniques) Guided Imagery and Visualising Recovery, gentle Healing Hatha Yoga poses and/or Restorative Yoga, Somatic Mind-Body exercises, NLP, Hypnotherapy, Meditation and Deep Relaxation. All with a special focus on health and healing.

  • Question 2. What is the difference between Yoga and Yoga Therapy?

Yoga is the ancient science of self knowledge developed in India over 5000 years ago. It is not a religion or a set of extreme exercises to be mastered, but a tool box of many different techniques including many of those listed above. Yoga Therapy is one part of this ancient science that focuses on health and wellness at all levels of the individual, physical, psychological and spiritual to bring balance to your body, mind and emotions. This journey to health is unique to each and everyone of us and as a Professional Yoga Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher Kathy will serve as your guide and mentor on your individual journey of healing and self discovery.

  • Question 3. What is a Professional Yoga Therapist and what qualifications do you have?

A Professional Yoga Therapist is a registered Yoga Teacher who has undergone further specialised training in yoga for medical conditions. Kathy is a qualified and registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance (Yoga Teachers governing body) at the RYT 500 hour level and a Professional Yoga Therapist and supporting member of the International Yoga Therapists Association, she is also a Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Advanced Hypnotherapist and Motivation Coach. • Question 4. Do I need to have practised Yoga before I start a Yoga Therapy programme?

No, contrary to popular myth, you do not need to be fit, flexible or have practiced yoga before to benefit from Yoga Therapy. Infact the integrative therapies offered by the Mindful Clinic are tailored to meet your exact needs, so yoga poses may not be part of your programme.

  • Question 5. How do I start?

Before your first session, you will have a free short consultation by telephone with Kathy to discuss your exact needs and to see if the Mindful Clinic can be of assistance to you. We will then schedule your first appointment which will also include time to complete the confidential forms outlining your medical history, life style, goals and a selection of structural assessments. If you have a medical condition, please discuss your programme with your Doctor or Specialist prior to starting.

You will find that rather than offering a diagnosis and treatment for a specific condition, following this first assessment, Kathy will select, adapt and modify the practices of modern Mind-Body health and healing techniques and ancient insights appropriately for you as an individual with respect to your age, culture, religion, goals and specific physical challenges and conditions.

This very much depends on you, at the first session we will agree a course of action which could be further 1:1 appointments or where appropriate small Yoga Therapy classes with individual attention. You will also be given a programme to practise at home.

  • Question 7. I have heard that high stress levels can cause illness, is this true?

Yes. Continued research around the world has shown that high levels of both emotional and chronic stress increase susceptibility to illness by suppressing the immune system. This suppression of the immune system creates an increased susceptibility to a great number of different illnesses including high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, cancer and diabetes and even colds and the flu.

Everyone has learned some ways of coping with stress that either reduces its emotional impact or decreases its effects on the body, this is an individuals unique stress response and explains why some people get ill and other don't.
